How to copy photos from WeChat to PC

You could use “File Transfer” in WeChat to transfer images to PC. However, Nexus 7 don’t have back camera and can not scan QR code so I can’t find a way to enable and use Web WeChat in a computer to take advantage of “File Transfer” in WeChat.

Here are steps to copy photos received in WeChat from Nexus 7 to my computer.
1. Connect Nexus 7 to my computer using a USB cable
2. I could see all photos received in WeChat in the following directory: Computer\Nexus 7\Internal storage\tencent\MicroMsg\14c8af29a70804aa5463b58e499b9a95\image2
3. I drag and drop image2 directory to Pictures: C:\Users\Howard\Pictures\image2
4. It is really annoying to have images in all sub folders under images2 directory. Here is the command to run in Command Prompt to copy all photos into one directory.
for /r “C:\users\howard\pictures\image2” %i in (*.jpg) do copy “%~fi” “C:\users\howard\pictures\LA\%~nxi”

How to Increase the Maximum File Upload Size in WordPress

After I upgraded to WordPress 3.9.2, I noticed I have trouble to upload images or videos bigger than 2MB. Looks like “Increase Upload Max Filesize” and “PBP Increase upload limit” plugins don’t work anymore. Here is how to fix the issue.

1. Go to wp-admin directory on your WordPress
2. If you have php.ini or php5.ini file in wp-admin directory, please add two lines like the following. In this case, I want to increase maximum file upload size to 250MB.
upload_max_filesize = 250M
post_max_size = 250M
3. If you don’t see those two files in wp-admin directory, please create them and add those two lines. If you knew your host uses php5, you could just only create php5.ini.

Install dd-wrt firmware on Linksys E2500 V3

I bricked my old router: WRT320N after upgraded to wrong tomato firmware. I bought E2500 V3 as the replacement. Here are instructions on how to install dd-wrt firmware on it.

1. Flash the Fractal’s Trailed Initial Flash Build (mini-e2500V3.bin)
(1) Log into your computer.
(2) Disconnect all cables and wireless clients.
(3) Do a 30/30/30 reset on router using the small reset button on the bottom, not back, of the unit.
(4) Connect 1 Lan cable to pc doing the flash.
(5) Log into Linkysys Web Interface Firmware Upgrade page at 192.168.1.1 and flash the firmware E2500 V3 Trailed Initial Flash Build: ftp://ftp.basmaf.com/Fractal_Builds/E2500-V3/dd-wrt.v24-23569_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-e2500V3.bin
(6) Wait 5 minutes to assure flash integrity.
(7) Power cycle by unplugging E2500 for 30 seconds.
(8) Plug E2500 back in and wait about 3 minutes until it finishes booting.
(9) Do a 30/30/30 reset using the small button on the bottom, not back, of the unit on the router.
(10) Wait 3 minutes and log into web interface.
(11) Check for the password page and re-login to change the password.

Note: Hard Reset (aka 30/30/30 reset):
The following procedure will clear out the NVRAM and set dd-wrt back to default values:
(1) With the unit powered on, press and hold the reset button on back of unit for 30 seconds
(2) Without releasing the reset button, unplug the unit and hold reset for another 30 seconds
(3) Plug the unit back in STILL holding the reset button a final 30 seconds (please note that this step can put Asus devices into recovery mode…see note below!)
This procedure should be done BEFORE and AFTER every firmware upgrade/downgrade.
Do not use configuration restore if you change firmware builds (different svn build numbers).

2. After the initial flash – should you want to flash to a build with more features you can use K3.x mega build
(1) Disable all firewalls and security. Disable wireless on your computer and only have the router connected to the flashing computer by the ethernet cable between the two.
(2) Hard reset (30/30/30) prior to flashing. Wait. Check for password page on re-login and change password.
(3)Log into Linkysys Web Interface Firmware Upgrade page at 192.168.1.1 and flash the firmware E2500 K3.x mega build: http://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2014/05-23-2014-r24118/broadcom_K3X/dd-wrt.v24-24118_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-e2500.bin

Everything looks good so far. However, dd-wrt only supports 2.4GHZ for E2500 V3. If you want to be able to use the 5GHz radio, I heard you can flash Fractal’s trailed build followed by Shibby’s build of Tomato (K26RT-N).

Malformed certificate when using IE 8.0 and Chrome

Recently one of my friend talked to me that he has issue to access www.linkedin.com with IE 8.0 and Chrome on his computer. He said he received this message when browsed through Chrome.

Cannot connect to the real www.linkedin.com
Something is currently interfering with your secure connection to www.linkedin.com.
Try to reload this page in a few minutes or after switching to a new network. If you have recently connected to a new Wi-Fi network, finish logging in before reloading.
If you were to visit www.linkedin.com right now, you might share private information with an attacker. To protect your privacy, Chrome will not load the page until it can establish a secure connection to the real www.linkedin.com.
What does this mean?
www.linkedin.com normally uses encryption (SSL) to protect your information. When Chrome tried to connect to www.linkedin.com this time, www.linkedin.com returned unusual and incorrect credentials. Either an attacker is trying to pretend to be www.linkedin.com, or a Wi-Fi login screen has interrupted the connection. Your information is still secure because Chrome stopped the connection before any data was exchanged.
Network errors and attacks are usually temporary, so this page will probably work later. You can also try switching to another network.

Technical details
The certificate that Chrome received during this connection attempt is not formatted correctly, so Chrome cannot use it to protect your information.
Error type: Malformed certificate
Subject: www.linkedin.com
Issuer: DigiCert SHA2 Secure Server CA

After tried out a few things, his issue is resolved after applied service pack 3 on his Windows XP machine. LinkedIn have switched to a SHA-256 signed certificate, but SHA-256 wasn’t supported in XP until SP3. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389

How to close apps in Windows 8

In the previous versions of Windows, an “X” in the top right hand corner existed in every application. In Windows 8 with the Modern UI, there are lots places where “X” is missing. How to close Windows 8 apps?

If you have a mouse or touchpad, you could hover your mouse at the top center of the screen you will see your mouse icon turn into an open hand. Click and hold as the hand grabs the top of the page and drag your mouse to the bottom of the page. The app will disappear from the app list on the left hand side, but in some cases it will take several minutes for the app to actually close.

This is equivalent to a gesture on Surface tablets. Swiping from the top of the screen all the way to the bottom of the screen — that dismisses an app from the left hand tray, but not immediately from the Task Manager. While Modern UI apps are supposed to go away after being idle for a certain amount of time.
